Link Melley Jr., Chairman
Link Melley is a co-founder and the chairman of Flexstar Financial Solutions.
Before starting Flexstar, Melley co-founded and was the president of Freedom Stores, Inc. (1983-2015). He also co-founded and served as the vice president and chief operating officer of Military Credit Services, LLC. Melley is an independent director for the Steward Funds, Houston, TX and serves as a director for the Forest Creek Golf Club, Pinehurst, NC.
Melley holds an MBA from The University of North Carolina, Kenan-Flagler Business School and a BA in Finance from The Catholic University of America. When not at work at Flexstar, he and his wife Ofelia enjoy traveling, golf, exercising, attending sporting and cultural events. The Melleys support a variety of charitable causes for the benefit of families in need and veterans.
John Melley – CEO and President
John Melley is a co-founder and the chief executive officer of Flexstar Financial Solutions.
Before starting Flexstar, Melley co-founded and was the president of Freedom Stores, Inc. (1983-2015). He also co-founded and served as the chief operating officer of Military Credit Services, LLC.
Melley holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from St. Michael’s College. He serves as a managing member of Waterville Property Management and on the Board of Governors for the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation.
When not at work at Flexstar, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Alaida and their three children. He is an avid golfer — with 5 hole in ones to his name — and also enjoys swimming, skiing and listening to Jazz and Blues music. Melley is an enthusiastic supporter of Access Foundation, Hampton Roads VA; Pan-Mass Challenge; JT Walk – Fight ALS and the Susan G. Komen – Race for the Cure.
Don Yang – Chief Lending Officer
Don Yang is the chief lending officer for Flexstar Financial Solutions. He is responsible for underwriting and asset management, customer care, and collections.
Before joining Flexstar, Yang was the chief lending officer for Chartway Federal Credit Union where he was responsible for bank’s lending operations. Prior to that he was the chief consumer credit officer for First Midwest Bank overseeing auto lending, personal loans, home equity and credit cards. Yang has also held risk management positions with JP Morgan Chase and Citibank.
Yang received a BS in Systems and Management Science from the University of Science and Technology of China, and holds a MEA in Economics from University of Michigan where he is working on his PhD in Economics. When not at work at Flexstar, he enjoys golfing, traveling, and spending time with his family. Yang also is a committed volunteer with Virginia SPCA, and he supports several charities that work with children in need.
Joe Peter – Business Development
Joe Peter is the vice president of business development for Flexstar Financial Solutions. In this capacity he grows new avenues of business in underserved vertical markets and oversees all retail partner relationships. In addition, he works with and leads internal teams to dramatically improve our customer and retailer experiences.
Before joining Flexstar, Peter was with MidCountry Bank where he served as Director of Lending Operations. He was responsible for meeting all credit performance objectives; maintaining 100% regulatory compliance in all internal audits and external examinations. He also designed all controls necessary to achieve Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
Peter holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Kansas. When not at Flexstar, he enjoys spending time coaching youth sports, traveling and listening to live music.
Carole Cohen – Marketing
Carole Cohen is the vice president of marketing for Flexstar Financial Solutions. She is responsible for corporate communications and messaging, brand strategy, design direction and marketing operations. Before joining Flexstar she was with Fiserv for more than 14 years, most recently as vice president, marketing services.
Cohen has extensive experience in B2B and consumer marketing that encompasses the creation and supervision of annual marketing plans, creating global company identities, collateral design, budget management, print and production scheduling, advertising development, directing tradeshow and client events, brand restructuring and product strategy.
Cohen graduated from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, with a BA in English Language and Literature. Her personal interests include architecture, design, cooking, reading and travel. Cohen serves as a volunteer on the marketing committee of Tidewater Arts Outreach, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to sharing the joy and healing power of the arts to those with limited access.
Cindy Mathews – IT
Cindy Matthews is the vice president of information technology for Flexstar Financial Solutions. She manages the information technology department, and is responsible for the network infrastructure, software and hardware implementations and maintenance, and informational reporting.
Before joining Flexstar, Matthews was the vice president of information technology for Freedom Acceptance Corporation where she managed IT infrastructure and handled new process implementations. Prior to joining Freedom Acceptance Corporation she owned her own Internet Service Provider (ISP), providing internet access, website development and hosting to the town of Franklin, Virginia.
When not at Flexstar she enjoys photography, cake decorating and quilting, but most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
Stephanie Williams – Compliance
Stephanie Williams is the director of compliance and quality assurance for Flexstar Financial Solutions. She is responsible for corporate planning and monitoring the corporate compliance program.
Before joining Flexstar, Williams was the vice president of collections for Freedom Acceptance Corporation (FAC) for more than 12 years.
Williams has 28 years experience within the financial industry working with financial institutions and retail partners as well as federal and state agencies. She has held designations with ACA International including the board of directors and council of delegates and served on ACPAC, creditors, research committees and Chair’s the education subcommittee. She also earned her ACA scholar and fellow designations and served on the board of directors with Guardian Federal Credit Union.
Williams graduated from Old Dominion University in Paralegal Studies. She has her NCCO certification and is currently attending Regent University with a major in accounting. Williams is also studying to take her CRCM certification.
When not at work, she enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as fishing and reading.
Karen Reilly –Controller
Karen Reilly serves as the controller of Flexstar Financial Solutions. She is responsible for all accounting operations and accounting-related activities, such as supervision of the company’s financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, risk management and conducting various special analyses.
Reilly has more than 27 years of experience as a controller. Before joining Flexstar, she was the controller for Freedom Stores.
Reilly holds an AS in Business. When the workday is done, her greatest pleasure is spending time with her family.
